Sell your ideas, not your numbers

Sell Your Ideas, Not Numbers & Views

Happy March!

It's so funny, I told myself I was going to try and talk to you once a week and ever since January, I have been going 100 miles an hour. Please forgive me!

I was sipping on my first cup of coffee today and reflecting back on some of my notes from February. I keep seeing the same note with 4 different coaching clients of mine: "great numbers on social media/podcast/YouTube...doesn't have a concept for the partnership or sponsor they are pitching."

I understand the urge of making the 1,000 to 200k+ following you have, to be the focal point of your pitch. You absolutely should gloat about those numbers, but it should be the last thing you talk about right before you are about to sign a partnership deal. You need to sell them on yourself first!

Business owners, marketing directors, and partnership executives don't have time to look at your content to see if it would match their brand or campaign. You should always lead with why you want to work with them, and why you believe your content or business fits their culture. The best way to create a partnership/sponsorship is by giving the company or the content creator you want to work with a clear vision of how you are going to benefit them.

For example, I pitched a non-alcoholic beverage company about two of the food content creators I am working with, and our hope was to partner the majority of the products they carry and pair them up with all the food reviews that they do around the Philly/NJ area. So I set out a plan from May to November, just like you would pitch a movie script. I made some (bad) photoshops and attached them to a marketing deck that I made in Google Slides which fully laid out the concept. I am happy to say we are moving forward because of that pitch!

You basically have to answer these three questions when you are pitching someone to partner with you:

1) Who are you and why should they care about your content or your business?

2) What are you going to do to help me get more money in my pocket, more customer, more clients, more followers, or more viewers?

3) How can we make money together?

Once you answer those three questions, you will be able to take a lot more meetings and find the right partners for you. Your engagement metrics, sales numbers, and everything is else is there to support you not be the all-star of your presentation. You have to understand that most of these people see 20k+ social accounts, monthly sale numbers, and podcast audiences all of the time. Do their jobs for them and create the concept that they should be pitching to their bosses, and that will get you green lights A LOT faster.

If you want to see type of marketing deck I use to pitch content creators and brands, just shoot me a quick note! I 'd love to send it to you.

Hope you have a great weekend and I promise I will be back in your inbox more frequently this March.

Go Birds. Go Hawks.

And here’s what most people...

SB Nation Removes Every Single Podcast Program There's so much more to expand on this, and I am going to do a proper job of that at some point this month in the newsletter. I linked an article in the headline and it was so alarming to read as some who started the entire podcasting program for them. It is a perfect example of what I was talking about two weeks ago when I said that "You Are The Platform!" If you are unfamiliar with SB Nation, it is a collection of websites for fans of mostly...

Stop Making Content for Platforms and Networks Good morning! I saw a tweet late last night from LaTecia Johnson and got really inspired to expanded on her Tweet thread. YOU ARE THE PLATFORM! Four months ago when I wrote my first newsletter to you, there might have been some hesitation when I wrote that we are "currently living in a revolutionary period of time that has just gotten started." Here is what has happened since the pandemic... 1) Everything thing that was centralized from a local...
